So I am jumping right into a series already 6 books in to get a taste of Carly Phillips’s romances. I was told right off I could read it as a standalone and I could, but I also missed some of the elements of who everyone was and where they fit in the series. Tyler Dare is a middle child of five kids in the Dare family. While a teen, Tyler catches is father with his mistress and has held onto the secret ever since even though a year later his father breaks his silence. The father had a second family with his mistress and now one of his daughter’s from that family needs a bone marrow transplant. So the mistress stuff is all out in the open, but not Tyler knowing about it a year before it happens. His father tells him to man up and not hurt his mother. Needless to say Tyler thinks he is a horrible person.

Not able to deal with his role in his mother’s pain, Tyler joins the military after his graduation from high school. On leave, he is seduced by his sister’s best friend, Ella Shaw, and does everything wrong. He says some awful things to her that night after taking her virginity. Unable to face the aftermath, he tells his family he has been recalled and leaves without speaking with Ella.

So now you have two incidents where he thinks he isn’t someone who can not betray those he loves and he keeps all his relationships at arms reach….until Ella is mugged in the Caribbean and left in a hospital with a hurricane bearing down on the island.

Ella for her part hasn’t really gotten over the night she seduce Tyler. She feels inadequate in bed with ever man after than. She has her dream job and while on a photo shoot, she stays over one more night to take care of loose ends. Thus mugged and her room tossed. Right away you will know what is the cause of all this as it isn’t really hidden or left to wonder why for long. Avery, Tyler’s sister and Ella’s best friend, sends Tyler to Ella’s rescue.

Sparks are flying between these two, but also resentment for past encounters. Tyler wants to take care of Ella and Ella wants Tyler. Both are protecting their hearts. Tyler realizes the damage he did to Ella and goes about fixing it, while also trying to keep his heart protected. Ella is thrilled with her time with Tyler, but also is learning to protect her heart as she realizes she really doesn’t have any family left in her life to care about her.

I was surprised with how passionate I found the story. I wasn’t expecting the use of some language, but then I was happy the author didn’t pussy foot around with words that don’t really fit…like cock and fuck. Tyler does a good job of making her feel beautiful and sensual, while Ella made Tyler feel normal.

The cast of family members flow in and out of the story. While it took a bit to piece them all together, it wasn’t hard to figure out. The suspense is minor to the story and comes to a head quickly. The inner drama both are feeling through the story gets taken care of, but not necessarily by each other. The love scenes were well written and very sexy. Overall, I enjoyed getting to know the Dare family and Carly Phillips’s writing.

Shari is the Delighted Reader. Married to her Prince Charming and mother to two Princesses and one Prince. When she is not slaving away as Cinderella she loves to get lost in the pages of a good book. Never without a reading device and a few good paperback books, because she never knows when she might get 5 minutes to read!
  • I have always wondered what her books are like. I have one or two that I got as giveaways. Looks like this one at least is pretty emotional, but sounds good.

    • Shari Delighted Read

This was my first time reading her books and I was impressed since I thought it might be stuffy. Not sure i will go back to read the entire series, but I can continue from this point.

  • This sounds good , so many books now that I want to read……. great review thank you for sharing:)

    • Shari Delighted Read

Thank you! It was a good read.

  • I think I read a Carly Phillips book once years and years ago. I can’t really remember what I thought about it. I’m not sure if I want to read this one. It sounds like Tyler is a bit of a jerk.

    • Shari Delighted Read

Tyler is a bit of a jerk, but the author wrote in a reason even if it was weak.

  • I’d be so pissed at him

    • Shari Delighted Read

I was and I didn’t like his theory of helping her get over her self-consciousness.

  • A well written romantic suspense and I can tell it, or HE, got to you

    • Shari Delighted Read

The suspense wasn’t great and I got upset with the hero a few times. Other than that, it was pretty good.

    Great review thanks

      Thanks!

  • oh wow…this one seems amazing. I read one of the previous books last year and really liked it. I have been meaning to get back to her. She does great with the sex scenes though. Not too little but not too much. Just right.

    • Shari Delighted Read

She has a good balance on the sex scenes, which I thought would be boring. This was my first book by her, but it won’t be my last.

  • I am glad you could jump in, but I am thinking your review is so good I might as well start at book one!

    • Shari Delighted Read

You probably read faster than me! I am already catching up on so many series, that I can’t add this one just yet. Maybe next year.
