The delight is going to be a warning and not in a delightful way. The story opens up sweetly with childhood love coming into a YA love that is on its way to being consummated when the unthinkable happens: the heroine is raped. It isn’t overly detailed, but there is enough to make it cringe worthy. While this is usually a no go for me, I found I wanted to see that she is taken care of and healed. I can’t say I enjoyed this story, but I can say it struck deep emotions that gutted me.
While letting you know the heroine has been raped may seem like a spoiler, it happens fairly early in the book and sets the tone for everything that happens afterwards. It destroys her family and not necessarily by the rape itself, but the ramifications from what happened afterwards.
Conor and Jake have been in love forever. Jake is older, but has kept from full sexual intercourse with Conor until she turns sixteen. The day of her birthday, Jake, his twin brother Jarret, and Conor’s brother Lorne head out on horseback to a ravine. Jake and Conor plan to consummate their love while Jarret and Lorne guard the only entry into the ravine. Everything goes wrong. Jarret and Lorne are over powered by two men with guns and force them into the ravine where Jake has tied up Conor while he makes love and dominates her. Jake is knocked out before he can free Conor, making her vulnerable to the two men who proceed to rape her while the boys are made to watch.
Before you even get far into the story you are overwhelmed with the violence that has touched these young teens lives. They do escape and set into motion a series of events the change them forever. A pact is made for revenge knowing this will be the last time they may all be together for a long time.
I laid a lot on you with just that brief part of the entire story. The story is much bigger than two men raping a sixteen year old girl. Everything starts to unravel, but not at a fast pace. Conor is taken away to Chicago by her father who becomes abusive. She dreams of escaping back to the ranch and Jake. Lorne goes to prison and I will let you read the story as to why he is there. Jake and Jarret are on the ranch and we don’t get most of the story of what happens to them until much further in the future.
A deeply complicated plot is unraveled and the men go step by step to take care of every lose end while protecting Conor by hurting her further. Conor struggles not just over being raped but everything that comes afterwards leading you into a mind twisted and at times fascinated by the taboo of what happens. While not broken, she didn’t heal correctly either. You spend time inside her mind as she goes through several years. The painful silent cry in her heart will over power the reader, but we have no power to help her.
When Jake and Conor finally make it back into each other’s presence, there is resistance, hatred, grief, sinister feelings and love. Twisted and dark, each have their own crosses to bear. Guilt of what was done, what was not done and what needed to be done comes in ways you would expect and not in others you would also expect. Their relationship is deeply moving and while some would say healing, I didn’t totally take it as they were healing. It was a path. A long path that one story didn’t have the time to explore.
I am trying to be vague, but give you a sense of how deeply dark this story is, but also that there is a light for them even as evil over shadowed their lives. They may have started innocent and young, but those dark fantasies Jake has as a teenager actually feel like child’s play with everything he ends up have to take on. This story left me wrung out, cried out, fuming and just plain melancholy from the thought that this could actually happen in real life. Gut wrenching, but also a well written story that could wring out these emotions and still want the rest of the story.
Jake is no longer a boy. Conor is no longer a girl. Secrets are made to be kept, but so are promises. Jake has dark desires. Conor is drawn to darkness. Jake isn’t letting her go. Conor isn’t sure she wants to go. It all leads to a tragic love story with no cliffhangers and a HEA if you believe in them.
