While we don’t know right off that paranormal creatures exist, there are alternate universes that do know. What? Am I totally wrong and they are here now? Well, for now let’s just say it’s not so…..So what do these universes have we don’t? What do they know? And who knows it? What happens when paranormal creatures step out of the shadows and into the world that surrounds them? Let’s get the paranormal out of the coffin and take a look.

Psy-Changling by Nalini Singh

In the Psy-Changling series, shifters are well known in this world. Along with Psy, who have special abilities that give their race a leg up. Then there are the humans who have to be scrappy dealing with these stronger beings.

The shifters are protectors, but also will tear your throat out if you threaten them or their pack. Humans have learned to adapt in many ways. Some have chips to block the Psy, but even those are starting to fail. Some have a little Psy in them, but they don’t want to be “Silent” like the Psy, who shun emotion. Humans also can fall in love with shifters and become part of the pack. In general this isn’t a problem if everyone doesn’t make it one.

Midnight Breed by Lara Adrian

The start of the Midnight Breed series is a rough one as they are hiding, but through a series of events they are outted. The series jumps into the future after humans find out and it isn’t all roses. Humans aren’t to accepting, but in reality they have some evil plots and some are just plain too weak to make much of a fuss. Then there is the Atlantean race that provided the breedmates that the Breed mate with and have sons. For the majority of the series, there were only male Breed, then through some experiments and a Gen 1 escaping, a few female Breed appear. This story organically moves along the path with secrets, and outting, jump to the future and new evil to battle. Humans aren’t that big of a speck on the shoe of the Breed Mostly annoying pests.

Shifters Unbound by Jennifer Ashley

Shifters realized that their emotions were tearing their race apart. They made a deal with the humans for collars to help control their rages and help families form. Not every shifter though wants to be collared and the human race doesn’t let them get away with it scot free. The collaring too a lot of freedoms away from the shifters. They are treated like second or even third class citizens that can’t leave the camps they are assigned to without permission. While I have only read a few books in this series, I feel so bad for the shifter community and being a human. I can’t believe we treated them this bad!

While this isn’t a full list, it is a few of my favorite paranormal romances that have come out of the coffin. What are yours?

I’ve enjoyed the first two, but need to get busy on Ashley’s. It can be fun when the humans are aware of the supes and get exciting when they learn of them in the middle of the series. Paige Tyler’s X-Ops series just had the big reveal in the last book and of course in the Mercy Thompson world the fae and werewolves are out to humans. Those are the ones that first came to mind. Oh, and Eileen Wilks’ World of the Lupi has the werewolves out and then the other supe come out later.
