Sophia Rose: Why did you choose this particular time period for your novella stories?
Stephanie: My mission is to write very smart books for very bad girls and Flappers were the original bad girls of American history. I wanted to write about women trying to understand their sexual natures in a time when womanhood itself was being reinvented.
Sophia Rose: If you lived in the Roaring 20’s, would you have been one of the daring women like the Flappers or one of the shy traditional girls?
Stephanie: I like to think I’d have been a daring Flapper…but I’m not sure I could have pulled off those gorgeous dresses!
Sophia Rose: Each of these heroines in the story were avant guarde in their own way: a woman who married beneath her, a poor girl who became a box office queen, and a working girl who organized a union. Have you done anything even on a smaller scale of that nature in your own life or have you known someone personally who was this type of woman?
Stephanie: I have been fortunate to know many impressive women who broke the mold. As for me, I think I was always a rebel trapped in the mind of a traditionalist. But I will say that I was voted Most Likely to Start A New Feminist Movement in high school, so that has to count for something.
Sophia Rose: Personally, I was taken aback by the wilder sexual fantasies and exploits of the characters and I think it’s because I imaged people were more repressed in historical times, but then I remembered bits and pieces from the era (must do more research). The story was full of authentic bits which made me wonder about your research for the book. Tell us about your research.
Stephanie: If you think you were taken aback, imagine my surprise when I stumbled over a vintage stag film that has since been digitized and put online. I had no idea what I was getting into when I clicked that link, but what I saw largely confirmed what I know to be true. Anything two (or more) people can think of to do in bed together has been done before.
In many ways, the 1920s were less sexually repressed than the decades that would come after it, and that is borne out by the kind of movies that were being made in Hollywood. Some of them pornographic even by today’s standards.
Sophia Rose: This story had a unique format. What made you choose to write it with the three separate, yet interwoven stories?
Stephanie: Partly, they just came to me that way. But once I’d written one of them, I knew that I wanted the other stories to weave together to make a coherent novel. I know it’s billed as a collection, but I really think of it as a novel in three parts.
Sophia Rose: What’s next up for you when it comes to writing projects?
Stephanie: I’m working on some new ideas, but I think if I start up with yet a new genre, my agent might kill me. But I have started to love working with a lighter tone in romance.
