Last week or so, Sophia Rose reviewed this book, Safe in His Arms by Renee Rose. I was curious and when I get curious about a book, I don’t like to read the review but figure it out on my own. So I skimmed her review and went and got it. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy this one and I will tell you why.
The premise is Becca and Zac meet at her sisters wedding. She admits to him she loves a dominant man who will spank her. She isn’t looking for marriage, just wants sex and a spanking. Zac agrees but he has an ulterior motive for being there in the first place. Zac is Black Ops and his target is to watch her in case her father comes back. Becca thinks her father is dead, but Zac knows he is a traitor wanted by the government. The two embark on a night of passion with lots of spanking, which Zac admits he didn’t know he liked nor does he have experience with it. When the weekend is over, Zac leaves but gives her an email address. Becca finds out she is pregnant and immediately tried to contact him only to have someone visit her home to tell her he died in combat and her and her child can receive a pension…all set up falsely by Zac.
Now seven years later, Becca comes home to find her live in nanny fighting to the death with Zac. A nanny who is actually a hit woman. Now Zac is back in their lives, but really he isn’t. He’s there to deal with the threat and disappear, but not before he gets in a good spanking on Becca. Becca then does something dumb hoping Zac is watching to get him to come back. When he does, she gets a big spanking. So they continue this part relationship where Zac really isn’t supposed to contact them, but does on the side.
Oh, and let’s not forget the paranormal element of Zac being able to be with his son when he is asleep. So Zac has seen his son bullied or visited him while Zac is being tortured. It felt really far fetched and off to me the entire time. Throw in the black ops and I just got a cheesy feeling from it all.
So while I wanted a hot, black ops hunk to masterfully take Becca in hand, it just felt like he did what he wanted and spanked her overly hard for offenses. Then throw in the need to be a dad but never be there. It just all left me not feeling all hot and bothered like I wanted. Instead I cringed when the belt came out and rolled my eyes when they tried to visit each other in dreams.
While I don’t feel this was my cup of tea, it might fit better with people who enjoy domestic discipline novels. I wanted more commandeering in bed and less Bond type feel. I wanted more than a spanking for spanking a caring man who also wants to do it for pleasure. I just couldn’t get what I wanted from this story.
