Lazaro Archer finally gets his story after having been dealt a horrible blow when his Dark Haven, Breedmate and family are massacred twenty years ago. Dedicating his life to the Order, he vows to never fall in love again, nor let anyone get close to him. A Gen One, Lazaro is one of the most powerful of the Breed.
Brokering a peace treaty secretly, he is blindsided with when a Breedmate accompanies her father to the meeting. When the covert mission goes terribly wrong, Lazaro is tasked with protecting the one lone survivor, Melena Walsh. The last time he saw Melena, life had been good and she had been a child. No longer a child, she evokes emotions and desires he no longer wishes to feel. Spurning Melena is hard, but necessary to his emotional survival.
Melena Walsh remembers the time Lazaro saved her as a child. The man he has become now is so different. Desire draws her to Lazaro. She doesn’t want him to forget his family, but to forgive himself for what happened and to move forward. But there are threats close to home that can destroy her before Lazaro can get his head out of his ass.
Lazaro has been a minor character, but a steady one, throughout the last few books of this series. I felt so bad for him when he lost his entire family except for a grandson. He devotes himself to the Order, but really doesn’t have a life. Melena awakens his desires, his need to protect and love. It was a powerfully short story that I recommend to anyone who loves the Midnight Breed series.
