The Book Report July 2016

The-Book-Report

Welcome to The Book Report where we run down everything that happened in the month and update you on challenges, giveaways, reviews and more!

Shari’s Update

July has been one hot month both outside and in bed between the covers of a good book. But oh, wait! My air conditioning went out mid-July! Yikes! Yes it was hot as the thermometer in the house edged to 80 and we waited for a repairman to come charge it. It needs to be replaced and I tried in April to get it fixed up for the season. Just one more season please? Nope, so now we are on a list for sometime late August to get a new one.

To add onto our financial misery, we have a ditch the runs along the back of our yard that has been the bane of our existence since we moved here over 12 years ago. For years I haven’t been able to get anyone to talk to us about fixing it. Then the city got their greedy hands on us and put so many restrictions on it that we are talking tens of thousands to fix it up to their code and they won’t pay a penny of it while they go around town replacing everyone else’s. Unfortunately it has to be done because our backyard has eroded over 6 inches and we now need to fix so many things it is causing problems …. never mind that the entire neighborhood dumps their storm water in our backyard. So we finally got someone to look at it and give us an estimate. Well, all I can say is it won’t get cheaper and all I can do is get poorer. Nothing fancy will be done to the blog for a long time.

To keep cool we have been going to Holiday World, which this will probably be the last year I buy annual passes for since the level of customer service has gone downhill. Dance is picking back up…oh wait didn’t we just end the season…yeah, year around sport that I am getting tired of already.

Happy thoughts. Happy thoughts. Books, reading, romance….yeah, that’s the ticket.

CLIFFHANGERS – you heard me yell this. Yes, I am tired of cliffhangers in the books I read. This month I have taken an aversion to a lot of things since they keep happening to me. Like picking up a books and getting a New Adult, first person, cliffhanger of a book. That is three strikes all in one on my type of books. So I am hoping August gets better because if I get one more cliffhanger book, I will probably ban the author from my reading material.

What did I do this month? Besides schedule posts? Well, not much on the reading front.

  1. Read: 19
  2. DNF: 1
  3. Reviewed: 11 reviews for July
  4. Reading Statistics: 2 from NetGalley or Publisher, 13 Purchased, 4 Kindle Unlimited
  5. NetGalley percentage at 86%

Books of note:

  • I finally finished the Lost in Oblivion Series. While I loved the series, some of the books had me wanting to yell at Simon, their singer. The reviews are coming and I loved the band, I just had problems with all the cliffhangers.
  • The Filthy Beautiful Lies series hit me hard as it started out with a sex slave auction. All voluntary so nothing too seedy, but seedy enough. I immediately went out to buy the rest of the series after book 1 ended in a cliffhanger. Cliffhangers seem to be a big problem for me this month.
  • Just What I Needed by Lorelei James really gave me a fun time. Love all the characters. It wasn’t an over the top love, just a even coasting, yeah, that kind of love.

Sophia Rose’s Update

I am actually writing this on 7/11 (incidentally, if you live in the US, hope you had the chance to snag your free 7-11 Slurpee this year).  I’m way early because in a few days I’ll be flying the friendly skies west to Utah to visit family and head out for some communing with nature.  We were supposed to do a road trip to Oregon and camp on the coast, but my brother’s leave got reduced (this will happen occasionally with the military so we roll with it).  New plan.  We’re headed to a closer campground up in the Uintah Mountains of Utah.  Forest, mountain lake, hiking trails, and not even a cell phone signal.  Ahhhh, that’s the life.  😉

Just a reminder that I’ll be unplugged for the majority of this trip so I’ll be scarce around the blogosphere and social media.  I piled on a ton of reviews into Shari’s mailbox and she didn’t even threaten my life for all that extra work.  What a trooper!  But at least I don’t feel I left her in the lurch.

Hopefully, I’ll have a dandy recap of my adventures for you next month.

Sun N Fun Word Scavenger Hunt was a hoot.  I had such a good time.  My competitive spirit was up and I was going for the win, but alas, Stephanie@Fangs,Wands,andFairyDust took the win by seven points.  Yay, for Steph!

And, COYER (Clean Off Your E-Reader) is in full-swing.  I’ve been having a ball working on my BINGO card, dropping in on the Facebook page and of course wading in on the books I lined up for this challenge.  My goal was low at 36 books.  I think I may need to double it.  Yeah, that would probably be best since I’m already at 28 books.  LOL

So reading update:  17 total read

Breakdown:  11 Net Galley (92%), 10 author/publisher requests, 2 from the TBR pile, 1 audio, 1 DNF, 7 new to me authors, 3 new series

Books That Stood Out:

Place Your Betts by Katie Graykowski, CR, Fab narrator and touching down home humor

A Robot in the Garden by Deborah Install, GF, adorable robot character and great character growth

Sinner’s Revenge by Kim Jones, CR, intense, sizzling couple

Dare to Stay by Jen McLaughlin, CR, she writes a superb shady hero finding redemption

Gone Too Deep by Katie Ruggle, RS, getting back to nature with killers and a city girl (yeah, I’ll have this on the mind while I’m out in the sticks now, LOL)

So, stay safe and enjoy.  Keep Shari company while I’m gone.  J

July 2016 Reviews

Did you miss a review? No fear! Here’s what we wrote about in the month of June.

The following two tabs change content below.
Shari is the Delighted Reader. Married to her Prince Charming and mother to two Princesses and one Prince. When she is not slaving away as Cinderella she loves to get lost in the pages of a good book. Never without a reading device and a few good paperback books, because she never knows when she might get 5 minutes to read!
  • Pop up bills are the worst. Those bills that surprise us and just pop up out of thin air. I hate those. I hate cliffhangers. Hate them. I will stop reading an author all together if one pops up at the end of a book. I’m not even kidding. Authors really need to rethink doing that because readers don’t like it.

    • Doesn’t those bills sound miserable, Mary? I hate thinking I have a good grasp on my budget until a surprise expense hits me, too.

      Grrr to cliffhangers!

    • Shari Delighted Read

I swear our entire salary from this year is going to be gong into an A/C and the ditch. I hate living in this house so much. The contractor did a crap job on painting and hanging doors. I have so many projects to fix, but the ones we have this year are taking all the money for a couple of years from our budget.

I hate cliffhangers too. I am about to ban any NA authors on my list and those that leave me in a cliffhanger.

  • Blerg on the heat. This month has been horrible for a lot of people. So many ACs going out 🙁

Sophia hope you have an awesome trip!!

    • Still in Utah, but back from camping. We had a lot of fun and relaxing. Yes, I felt so bad about Shari’s AC. That’s a tough hit during these hot and humid summer days. 🙁

    • Shari Delighted Read

Yep, it’s been hot around here and we are hanging on the edge of the AC going out. They told us mid-August to get a new one and then the end of August for the ditch. I will be completely broke by the time August is done.

  • Sorry to hear about your AC stopped working Shari, that’s the worst timing for it to stop working in the middle of summer. And that ditch that needs to get fixed. It seems everything costs so much money lately. I don’t mind cliffhangers too much once they are well done and fit the book, but sometimes they just seem to be used so the reader will buy the next book.

@sophia, I am looking forward to your recap of your trip. i hope you’re having a great time. And I am glad to hear you’re enjoying COYER. I haven’t been as active as I would’ve liked as I seemed to have some trouble managing everything these last few weeks, but I am enjoying it. And totally forgot to do the bingo. I wonder if I can still do that now.

I hope you both have a great August!

    • I hope to put together some good pictures for you with my next month report. We are having a fantastic time. Got back from camping, but still in Utah at the moment.

You know, I’ll bet you can fill out a BINGO card and count any books you’ve read from the start of COYER that match the categories b/c the rule only says that you have to clear your card if you win, but not if you lose. 🙂

      Have a great August, too!

    • Shari Delighted Read

Thanks Lola. It just isn’t our year. I really hate cliffhangers because if you want to know what happens, they make you pay twice for the story.

  • oh Shari I am so sorry to hear about you AC!!! We had that problem a few weeks ago as well, and it was just miserable. But it happens every single summer—-but its so miserable to experience. Hope it gets fixed for you soon!!! I definitely agree with you on cliffhangers…they can be so annoying. Its why I am careful when reading NA or thinking about YA because there are so many of them in those genres. But it looks like you got some good reads in. Hope August is a good month for you.

Sophia—I am so thrilled you get to go on your vacation!!! Hope its a great trip for you. Hope you have fun in Utah—-its so beautiful here. It makes for a perfect camping trip. 🙂

    • Thank you, Renee!

Just got back from the camping trip and it was fantastic. I feel so relaxed and was sad to leave our picturesque (and cool) campground, but it’s been fun attending a baseball game, a movie, and now I head out to visit an old family friend I haven’t seen for years that just moved across country to Idaho.
You have a gorgeous home state. 🙂

    • Shari Delighted Read

We are on the list to get a new A/C, but ours is limping along so we are at the bottom of the list. Cliffhangers…so annoying! And I am so done with NA and YA books. They are so angsty like they don’t have normal lives.

  • Ah man, sure hope August is better Sheri. And hope you’re having a blast, Sophia.

    • So far; so good, Christy! 🙂

    • Shari Delighted Read

      Thanks Christy!
