Shari’s Update

I am sad September is over. I love the start of fall even if most of this month has been so hot. The good news is we got our new air conditioner and heating installed.

Second piece of good news is they started work on our ditch in the back yard that the entire neighborhood funnels their storm water through. One of our neighbors approached the men working and asked when they were getting to her side. They laughed at her and explained this was a private job, not city job. So she approached us wanting to know why we weren’t fix it all. Yeah, well, we have the city moving up their timeline to fix the ditch along our driveway timed with the one we are paying for in the back. Does this woman think we are made of money and seriously that we give a damn about her yard? Sorry, I do care, but I don’t too. With what we are paying to fix ours, she can sue her own neighbors for the loss of her land. We are done.

So they dug this all up Tuesday night! Wednesday they showed up around 10 and delivered 5 trucks of sand, 6 48″ pipes and the connecting box to our non-compliant neighbor’s easement. To say my son is in heaven climbing the dirt piles is an understatement!

Yesterday made day three of this mess. They delivered a truck of rock around 7am and then put in the connecting box to our neighbor who has a rusted out pipe that’s too small. Our neighbor is a policeman who meticulously maintains his landscaping. I guess he talked to them before they tore up his nice bushes in the easement. Well, the guys yesterday just put their bulldozer right on top of them, destroying them. So far he hasn’t come to discuss it with us, don’t you just love neighbors?

ditch

Last night it rained, so it’s pretty muddy out there. The work guys didn’t show up, but I did see two of them at my son’s school, which is getting an addition to help with the overcrowding. With the weekend here, I don’t think we will see them again until Monday at the earliest. When this is all done, I think we will gain so much land back that we have never had. Maybe next spring we can plant some trees to keep any more erosion from happening.

Reading, writing, but no arithmetic! Sophia Rose had an amazing opportunity to work on a new book so I tried hard to leave her alone and let her write. That meant I needed to step up my game to get posts out there. Boy am I so tired, lol. It’s amazing though because I had my best month this year for writing reviews at a grand 17 reviews!  Sophia Rose came in at 16, so how does she do it?

NetGalley oh, NetGalley. I was on their site one week finalizing my reviews when they kept suggesting I put in review for books long archived. Ok, so I started pulling up the reviews on the site and found I had a ton of reviews I never put into NetGalley. I worked on them for a day and wow! I saw my percent go from 86% to 96%. I got as high as 97%, but then I went click requesting books.  Not sure what kind of NetGalley goal I will set for next year, but it won’t be so much on improving my percentage. My goal for 2016 was to get to 90%. At 96% I think I over did that goal!

What did I do this month? Besides schedule posts? Well, not much on the reading front.

  1. Read: 12
  2. DNF: 0
  3. Reviewed: 17 reviews for August
  4. Reading Statistics: 2 from NetGalley or Publisher, 4 Purchased, 2 Kindle Unlimited, 4 Tour Reviews
  5. NetGalley percentage at 96%

Books of note:

  • Deadly Silence by Rebecca Zanetti – you know you are a fan when you snap up a book by an author and don’t even know what it is about. I didn’t like the cover so I was cautious until I started. Hard to believe it is in the same world as another series she wrote that I adored. I am so happy I get more of this world. This review is coming up on October 5!
  • The Trouble with Mistletoe by Jill Shalvis – this was my second boook by Jill Shalvis and now I am hooked on her writing. I see myself putting her series on my challenge to read never ending stories for next year! This one had so much Christmas heart and sexy characters!

Sophia Rose’s Update

Howdy, all!

Can’t believe it’s fall.  The weather around here can’t believe it either so we had several days of heat and humidity including last week, but then it dropped into the cool, crispy temps and now we’re talking.

I’ve been a tad preoccupied working on a book for a while now that I turned in to a publisher for consideration.  It was my first time working on one of those catchy Cover Letters, a snappy synopsis, and a story that had to fit so many criteria.  Crossing fingers that my story is accepted, but also just so crazy happy to go through the process and know that an editor will see it and work on it whether it’s published or not.  Experience of that sort is almost as big a deal as getting published.  I have several weeks to wait on a decision, but you’ll know when I do if I get that happy letter or a kind letter of what worked and didn’t worked.

But books, that’s what it’s all about now.  First of all, I finished the COYER challenge on a high note.  It was my first time participating and I didn’t set my goal high enough even for my summer slow down.  I had a goal of forty books and hit 63.  Woohoo!  I also had the goal of getting COYER BINGO and I did that three times with one being for a winning card.  The Facebook group was a lot of fun and I got to interact with and ‘meet’ several other fantastic readers.

hohohorat2016

And along the lines of fun bookish challenges, I signed up for the Ho Ho Ho Readathon hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reader for November.  Lots of time to sign up over at her blog if you’re interested.  I’ll share my goal for that closer to the start.  Here’s the link if you want to check it out:  http://caffeinatedbookreviewer.com/2016/09/ho-ho-ho-readathon-november-9th-15th-signup.html

I got several read this month and am back on track.  Wished I’d have been more temperate with saying ‘no’ a few more times than I did, but self-control around review invitations is tough on me.  Haha!

September 2016 Reviews

Did you miss a review? No fear! Here’s what we wrote about in the month of September.

The following two tabs change content below.
Shari is the Delighted Reader. Married to her Prince Charming and mother to two Princesses and one Prince. When she is not slaving away as Cinderella she loves to get lost in the pages of a good book. Never without a reading device and a few good paperback books, because she never knows when she might get 5 minutes to read!
  • September has been a warm month here mostly as well, only the last week or so it has cooled down. It’s nice to have some colder weather. I am glad to hear your new air conditioning and heating is finally installed. That’s neat your ditch is getting fixed, but that is a bit weird that women expected you to fix her ditch. Neighbors sure can be a pain sometimes. That’s great you got yur netgalley percentage up to 96%, I am still struggling at 67%. I did send feedback for two books that i never got to download, but I might have to submit feedback on some that I don’t plan on reading as well. I hate that those books count against me now.

@Sophia, we finally got some fall weather here too, yay! Although most of the days I have no idea what to wear now that it suddenly got colder. I hope you’ll get good news about your book! That is exciting to submit your book and wait and see if it gets accepted. Is this a short story or a full length book. I am glad you had fun during Coyer! I always love that challenge and it was fun to see you participate as well this time :). And you did great with your goals too! That Blogger Shame challenge is a difficult one, but it does seem like you have a good chance of making it, unlike me, lol.

I hope you both have a great October!

    • Yeah, I agree about neighbors sometimes being pains. I’ve always said that if I can afford it some day, I’m moving out to the middle of nowhere on a huge piece of land away from neighbors. 😉

I am very excited to work on a book and submit it. It’s a novel and about 75000 word count though an editor will probably slice it up since I tend to ‘tell’ rather than ‘show’ some of the time.

I hope to do the next COYER challenge though I know it is hard when it is for just ebooks and only those that are free or purchased. Not ARCs. Still. I do need that sort of challenge b/c I click on so many freebies. 🙂

The Blogger Shame will be a close one, but I stand a good chance of making it. So much harder when newer review books always seem more interesting. 🙂 Plus, with the newer ones, I still stand a chance of getting them reviewed and posted around the release date. Best wishes to us, both. 🙂

September cooled down some, but it is heating back up next week. So the air conditioning is going back on. The ditch is a pain and the amount it is costing us is cutting into the money I can spend on the blog. So we won’t be doing a ton of new things. I just went in to NetGalley and filled out a lot of old reviews and it helped a lot. I have about 5 more to write about now.

  • I can’t believe September is over already, like this year is going by so fast. Awesome job ladies!

    • No kidding, Sharonda! I was buried in my writing cave for most of September and only came out a week ago, but suddenly it was fall and half the month was gone. LOL

You have a great weekend, too!

    • Shari Delighted Read

September went way to fast! I need to get back to reading some more.

  • I can’t believe how fast this whole year has flown by. It’s crazy! BUT October is my birth month AND I love Halloween so I guess that’s a plus. haha! Hope you have a great weekend!

    • Yes, exactly, Julie! Just flown by. But yay, birth month’s should be fun. I was always envious of my best friend who has her birthday near Halloween b/c she got to start the party and treats early. 🙂

You have a great weekend, too.

    • Shari Delighted Read

October is my daughter’s birth month too. She loves Halloween, so every year sh does something themed for her birthday. It’s one of my favorite months!

  • Shari – wow I am sorry you are going through that, the nerve of some people thinking that somehow you should be responsible for their stuff also. My husband is a contractor and is actually dealing with a similar situation with one of his customers..

Sophia – good luck! it must be exciting and nerve wrecking, working with publishers can be scary. I really hope something good turns out from it, even if its just the experience.

    • Thank you, Lily! I’m crossing my fingers and would love to be accepted, but I also keep my expectations lower so I don’t have a big disappointment. Yes, it has already been worth it for the experience.

    • Shari Delighted Read

I don’t care for many of my neighbors. The police guy is arrogant and like to talk to people doing work on our property like he has the right. His son is bad too. He likes to whip it out and pee in our yard. Then was climbing in the dirt and pipe as they were installing it. If I see it again, they are going to get an earful. The woman to the back only talks to us when she wants to complain about things and get us to do something. She likes we are fixing this ditch, after she complained to the city over and over even though none of it is part of her land nor was she losing any land to us. Then there is the new couple next to us that built and caused sink holes to appear in the yard between us. They keep complaining to the city as well. So yeah, right now I am about done with my neighbors….who were not even here when we bought this house. I miss those days of being all alone on this road.

  • oh what a month you both have had here!!!! I am so sorry to hear about your troubles Shari!!!! Hope you get everything worked out.

What a month Sophia…you are my hero!!! I have no idea how you get everything done and working on a book too!!! Brilliant. I am glad we are getting to the cooler weather.

    • Don’t let me fool you, Renee. My work is flexible most of the time and part-time plus I don’t have a lot of other responsibilities. But how kind of you to say so. 🙂 Crossing my fingers about the book. I started it during the NaMoWriMo last year and was tickled that someone was willing to take a look at it.
Oh yes, I’m glad it’s cooler too though it’s been very rainy for us.

    • Shari Delighted Read

Thanks! I am just happy to finally get to a point where I can put this on my done list. I mean I have been calling excavators for 12 years and this is the first time they returned my call. In fact I called 4 of this year alone. So we didn’t get to compare quotes. We just had to go for it.

  • Dang that was rather ballsy of the neighbor. smh Glad things are getting fixed even if at your expense. Frustrating but will be a relief I’m sure.

Ahhh Sophia! How nerve wracking! Fingers crossed and best wishes 😀 Hope you hear good news soon!

    • I’m trying to keep my mind off the waiting by moving on to a few other projects, but well wishes are greatly appreciated. 🙂

  • Wow, ya gotta love neighbors Sherri! Thanks for the shout out and I have my fingers and toes crossed for you!!!

    • You’re welcome, Kimberly! It looks fun and works perfectly since I have several holiday review books. 🙂

      Appreciate the well wishes, too.
