Today we would like to welcome Lauren Gallagher to Delighted Reader to talk about her contribution to the Underground Erotica anthology, Moonshine For Three.
So my contribution to the Underground Erotica anthology, Moonshine For Three, involves Prohibition. It takes place out on a gambling boat off the coast of California, and revolves around a cop, his former lover who’s now an alleged bootlegger, and that lover’s girlfriend. There’s also some rope involved.
Why did I choose this? Well, when we settled on the theme of “underground”, my mind immediately went to bootlegging, smuggling, and various similar underground activities. A little research into illegal gambling boats, and a smutty, Noir-flavored story came to mind. I love Noir films, so I’d been wanting to play around with that type of story for a long time. This one will not be my last.
And why did I publish it as Lauren Gallagher instead of my better-known alter ego, L.A. Witt? Actually, it was supposed to be an L.A. Witt story. That is, a gay scene. But then the character Alice decided she didn’t like just being a background character, and she wanted to play too. And really, who am I to argue when a character wants to join in?[box title=”Excerpt”]November 1938
Off the coast of Long Beach, California
The night’s too damned cold to be out in a boat. Even for this time of year. Wind’s been whipping through Long Beach since noon, and the farther this creaking water taxi takes us out to sea, the worse it’s getting. The waves are high and white-capped. If my partner Danny gets as seasick as he says, then it’s a damn good thing he didn’t come along.
Gentleman next to me lost his hat a mile from shore. Says maybe that’s a sign he shouldn’t be playing the tables tonight—not if Lady Luck ain’t on his side. Let’s hope she’s on mine.
The ship’s there up ahead. Doesn’t look like much: just an old merchant ship some moonshiner anchored off shore and converted into a floating casino. Been almost a year since this one showed up. There were others back then, and there’s loads more now. More gambling here than there is in Monte Carlo, they say.
Boat’s rocking hard tonight, and creaking and groaning over the music and voices coming from the upper decks. There are others around, boats like this, some bigger, some smaller, but the Miss Fortune is where I’ll find Alice Durham.
That’s what my partner says, anyhow. Don’t know how I’m going to pick her out from the other broads on board, but she ought to be here tonight. Danny said she’d be, and he’s got boys on the inside who say they know.
“You can’t miss her,” he’d insisted when he left me to board the water taxi. “Unless there’s another dame who looks like Ginger Rogers on that bucket of rust.”[/box]

Lauren Gallagher is an abnormal romance writer currently living in the wilds of Omaha, Nebraska. She and her husband, along with a coyote-iguana hybrid and two and a half cats, are thought to be in hiding from the Polynesian Mafia and a debt collector in search of a fine for an overdue book from the Library of Alexandria. Lauren continues to skillfully, if somewhat clumsily, elude them, but continues to have run-ins with her arch nemesis, M/M erotic romance author L. A. Witt. The implementation of Operation: I Don’t Think So is expected to resolve that problem soon enough.
Welcome to the Underground!
The erotica authors of the Absolute Write are taking you underground—sometimes literally, sometimes figuratively. Karenna Colcroft’s haunting story gives sex in public an unexpected twist, and Erin Lark makes waiting out a storm into something special—and hot!— before Kate Lowell draws you deep into a cave for a steamy encounter. Lauren Gallagher sends you back to the 1930s for some gambling, bootlegging, and a little forbidden ménage, while Maryn Blackburn brings two enemies together in the wintery depths of World War II.
If you’re in the mood for something extra spicy, you’ll love how C.P. Foster opens up a very new world for a curious barmaid. And stick around because Cleo Peitsche and Jack L. Pyke keep the kink coming.
Come join us—but fair warning. Once you go underground, you may never want to come back…
All proceeds from this anthology benefit the Absolute Write online community.
Next Stop: End of the line! Stay tuned—we’re drawing for the big prize packs on the 18th and letting the winners and the participating blogs know. Thanks for joining us!
