Another Kindle Unlimited books that left me scratching my head that it wasn’t horrible, but needed some editing and smoothing done to it. It is a rough subject of a prison break, but then the author threw in a MC along with some dirty lawyers and law men. It just all felt off some of the time and others I was cheering for them.

Tessa is a paralegal sent in her boss’s place for a parole hearing for inmate 91428, Max. Incarcerated for killing a man who killed is ex and unborn child, he makes no bones about the fact he hunted down the man and killed him. He doesn’t have much to live for (and he wasn’t in love with his ex, just really wanted that child), so he has no interest in parole. Tessa is very familiar with his case and thinks he should have been shown leniency, but she is also secretly in love with this unknown man.

So the day of the parole hearing, Tessa is already having a bad day when a prison break is planned. Max wanted nothing to do with it, but he can’t leave Tessa to be gang raped and killed. So he claims her as his and leaves the prison knowing they have to get away before it gets worse or someone challenges him.

It’s a rough couple of days as they make their way to the friendly territory where he can make some decisions and let Tessa lose. The lustful thoughts for her aren’t going to happen, he thinks, as he drags her in heals across the Florida swamps to a hide out his uncle had built in the ground (paranoid SOB).

So the story takes off with them on the run, Tessa falling for Max, but knowing their future isn’t much to write home about. She starts helping him hide, while Max takes longer to come to the decision Tessa is his for the keeping. Who knew he would now have something to live for with his life so messed up.

Make no mistake Max is an ass. I want to say not having the best life growing up was the reason, but he just isn’t that likable. He’s a tattoo artist doing business with an MC that he has a room kept for him. Everybody thinks it is weird and you find out why he has it later. Tessa while smart, just came off as indecisive a lot. She’s already worshiping Max long before she ever meets him. The situation to fall in love in isn’t the greatest and he doesn’t exactly treat her the best. But she stays. There is rough sex most of the time and anal sex as well. You know those MC guys, got to have all the holes God gave women.

An interesting mix of concept for the book and with some smoothing out and maybe an editor, this might be a great series. For now it needs some growth and something to make us like the characters. They are inherently evil, just need something to grab onto that makes you like them.

This ends with a HEA and a few surprises. I am not sure I want to continue this series. It’s toeing the line.

Shari is the Delighted Reader. Married to her Prince Charming and mother to two Princesses and one Prince. When she is not slaving away as Cinderella she loves to get lost in the pages of a good book. Never without a reading device and a few good paperback books, because she never knows when she might get 5 minutes to read!
  • Never seen this one before, but I think I’ll pass. The next MC romance that I add to my TBR has to be great, you know. I’m tired of “okay” and “meh”. Based on your review, I’d get mad just having to deal with Max.

I love Joanna Wylde’s MC romances, but I haven’t found many others I like. The MC part isn’t something you see coming and it really isn’t the main part of the story. The prison break part is mostly what’s it about.

  • Yes, the author really needs to sell something likeable about these types since they are already anti-heroes to begin with. The prison break and running would be exciting. Definitely some potential there.

It had a crazy idea so I said why not. It just wasn’t my style to like. He’s really rough and really is unapologetic for what he did. That’s not horrible when you know his reasons. I just needed them to not be idiots for a bit.
