Ruthie Knox knows how to write books I just faint over to read! When given a chance to read an ARC of this new series, I jumped up and down screaming. Yes, please!
Ellen Callahan has had an unusual life as a pop stars twin sister. Growing up in the shadow of her best friend, but also second place in her mother’s heart. Wanting love, she married only to find out the man she loved didn’t love her the same back. Pregnant and alone, she has come to rely on herself for everything. Now a few years later, her son is the light of her life as well as standing on her own two feet. When her pop star brother falls for the pregnant woman next door, her and her son come under the paparazzi’s eye. When Caleb Clark shows up claiming to provide security, she laughs in his face.
Caleb Clark has come home after retiring from the army to take care of his family. Starting a security company isn’t easy, but when he lands a big job protecting his high school friend and her lovely neighbor, he takes this is as the opportunity to grow his business. But at every turn, he butts heads with Ellen when all he wants is to provide the personal protection only he can give her.
Ellen decides that she wants to be a chickie and have a one night stand with Caleb, but one night turns into a night to remember and Caleb is negotiating for more. But Ellen doesn’t want to give up control of her life and trust a man to not take over. Throw in the Jamie (Ellen’s twin brother) coming home to be with Carly (Jamie’s girlfriend) who hates his guts and you have a enjoyable romp around town, arguments to rival arguments and some truths breaking down a persons defenses.
There is a lot going on in Along Came Trouble besides a steamy romance between the H/H. Jamie and Carly have an interesting role in the story and it was slightly confusing. At one point I thought Carly was pregnant with Jamie’s baby only to find out that she got pregnant with her ex-husband and then met Jamie and they had a wildly erotic time together. If I had a complaint about it, it would be how confusing Jamie and Carly’s part in the story was. Also, the two women, Carly and Ellen seem to have the problem of getting pregnant by their husbands right before they get divorced. Carly and Jamie’s story seem to be under developed as we come into it right in the middle.
Ellen has to learn to trust a man again and give her heart, while Caleb also deals with his parents. He lives with his sister who has come home from Alaska, hurt, but not talking. His father has had a stroke and his mother can’t seem to forgive her husband for being weak. The family owns an apartment building that is aging along with his parents. Caleb must realize that he is good enough as well as realize he can only do so much to support his parents.
What drew me to the story was just how real Ellen was after being brought down so low. Her brother is her best friend but she isn’t blind to his flaws. Her son is a big part of her life and it was fun to watch him toddle around. Caleb is a man who doesn’t know his worth. Watching him learn to accept himself and that he does a good job was awesome to watch.
I recommend this to anyone who loves a sexy couple, who just want to be average people doing extraordinary things. Fighting to love and be loved. But also realizing their mistakes and doing what they have to to make them better. It all wraps up into a sexy combination that equals awesome.
