The Delight

Progressing through the Psy-Changeling Readalong, I enjoyed going back for this second book in audio edition.  Angela Dawes is sensational portraying characters and world so well.

Visions of Heat is the second in the series and works best read/listened to in order.

Faith Nightstar an F-Psy (forecaster) has been assaulted by a disturbing darkness during her unfocused dream times.  She fears it is the beginning of madness that all F-Psy eventually succumb to.  Then she gets a call from her father that her sister was murdered- strangled.  Faith realizes that she didn’t dream- she was present in the killer’s mind at her sister’s death.  What can this mean?  Her desperate confusion leads her to leaving her safe, sterile habitation and going to consult the one person who might be able to tell her the truth and won’t turn her in to the psy medical teams for a mental overhaul and an institution for the rest of her life.  Getting to Sascha Duncan the rogue psy is challenging from the start with sneaking out of her home compound guarded by her family clan and monitored by medics, but then she encounters a wild changeling jaguar who takes Faith as a threat and as possible prey to play with.  Her emotionless, reclusive life has not prepared her for a sensual, complicated person like Vaughn, but she quietly determines to give it a try even if it means full mental deterioration comes faster.

Is she a Psy spy or a trembling naive, but brave woman who searches for help discovering a Psy killer from her people’s enemies?  Vaughn isn’t sure nor is he sure what to do with his cat nature’s desire to play and push Faith out of Silence into the colorful, vivid life of the Changelings.  But, too much too quickly hurts her and he won’t do that.  He also finds himself connecting with someone on a deeper level for the first time in his life and sharing with her the loss of his sister and about his past.  His jaguar is wilder than others, but maybe this brave Psy might give him a chance?

The romance was swift and sensual, but also sweet between two seeming opposites.  I liked how their romance was set against the expanding knowledge of the Psy-Changeling world, the mystery of Faith’s sister’s death, the suspense of who will fill the empty seat on the Psy council, the issues of hidden knowledge about Faith’s psy designation and the the expanding knowledge of the darker side of the psy-net.  But, there are fun moments of connection with familiar Changeling faces particularly Sascha-darling, Lucas, Clay, the cubs, and the growing connection with the wolves and the Loren family.  I did enjoy the interesting reveal at the end about Faith’s father just as much the second time around.

All in all, this delve back to the beginning of the series has reminded me of much I’ve forgotten and also was easier to understand some of the details that I missed the first time through.  Can’t wait to move forward to Caressed by Ice.  Those who enjoy Paranormal Romance do not want to miss this series.

About the Book
Visions of Heat by Nalini SinghVISIONS OF HEAT BY NALINI SINGH

A Psy/Changeling novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Shards of Hope, Shield of Winter, and Heart of Obsidian…”the alpha author of paranormal romance” (Booklist).

Used to cold silence, Faith NightStar is suddenly being tormented by dark visions of blood and murder. A bad sign for anyone, but worse for Faith, an F-Psy with the highly sought after ability to predict the future. Then the visions show her something even more dangerous–aching need…exquisite pleasure. But so powerful is her sight, so fragile the state of her mind, that the very emotions she yearns to embrace could be the end of her.

Changeling Vaughn D’Angelo can take either man or jaguar form, but it is his animal side that is overwhelmingly drawn to Faith. The jaguar’s instinct is to claim this woman it finds so utterly fascinating and the man has no argument. But while Vaughn craves sensation and hungers to pleasure Faith in every way, desire is a danger that could snap the last threads of her sanity. And there are Psy who need Faith’s sight for their own purposes. They must keep her silenced–and keep her from Vaughn…

About Nalini Singh

I’ve been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There’s no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I’ve worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer’s mill.

I was born and raised near Sacramento, CA. I have read since I was four years old and developed tastes that run the gamut of literature. I went away to college and have a degree in education, a certificate in family history research, and a certificate in social work. I worked for a non-profit agency with low income families for 20 years which included being responsible for the children’s library and promoting/teaching adult literacy. I have lived in Southeast Michigan for the last 18 years and I am currently a book addicted homemaker with a cat and husband who keep me grounded. Recently, I made it a challenge to review each book that I have read as a favor to author friends who said reviews are important. I have done reviews for Good Reads, Amazon, eBay, and Smashwords, but mostly at Goodreads and Amazon.

I remember reading her books back when but it’s been a while since I’ve read one of her books. One of these days I’ll read all her books.

I read these early ones a while ago and I’ve been enjoying this reunion with them. I know you’ll enjoy your return to the series when you get the chance, Mary.

This is my first time through, but I’m loving the series so far. I did read the spin-off Trinity after reading Slave to Sensation and have read all those books to date. I already have the next audio ready to go. Glad to hear you’re enjoying it a second time through!

That is amazing that you have read all the Trinity ones first after Slaves to Sensation. It will be interesting to see what you think of this first season of the series now that your listening in. My favorite books are still coming, but Caressed by Ice was the first one. Hope you love it.

I just remember loving this one so much, Faith is such a solid heroine and love her role in the series. Looking forward to picking it up again.

I had only vague memories of this one though stuff started coming back as I listened. Faith was a beautiful heroine as she explored, grew, and showed great courage to step out like that and with Vaughn who was rougher and wilder than others of his race.

It must be so strange going back and reading those stories and seeing the world then, after knowing what happens later. I am enjoying reading the reviews for this read along.

In truth, I can see where there was a great deal of foreshadowing and I missed a lot my first time through. Then, there is also the fact that after all these couples, I couldn’t keep these earlier ones straight and I’m getting to know them all over again. 🙂

It’s been too long since I read that series, I haven’t finished it yet (#11) ! I loved the way she could build a whole universe, that was fascinating, and such imagination ! Such warm characters, too 🙂
