Hey everyone!!! Thanks to The Delighted Reader for having me back here for my Dirty Deeds blog tour 🙂 Dirty Deeds is the first in this spin-off series of Hell or High Water. Dirty Deeds focuses on Cillian and Mal, two characters who’ve been in both Hell or High Water books 1 & 2 (Catch a Ghost and Long Time Gone.) Dirty Deeds # 1 captures a very specific moment in time for the Cillian (the spook) and Mal (the former SEAL in exile).
Sophia Rose: It is a pleasure to welcome S.E. Jakes author of the addicting Hell or High Water series and her latest effort, Dirty Deeds, featuring lethal and capable undercover men who lace their danger with some scorching hot romance. I became a fan after reading Catch a Ghost and its sequel which I posted as reviews here back in the fall. I am thrilled at the opportunity to fire off some questions at Ms. Jakes about her books.
One of the things I love about the Hell or High Water stories- (which are the only one I’ve read, but I will be remedying that soon)- is how authentic the characters feel when it comes to their profession and I noticed that your Men of Honor and new Dirty Deeds series have characters in similar professions too. How did it all come about that you chose to write about highly trained military and special ops guys?
S.E. Jakes: Because that’s the genre I really love to read / watch TV shows and movies about. So it’s a natural extension of that. I write the books that I want to read. I also do a lot of research, both through reading / TV and I’ve got some guys who I consult with (from the military and other agencies). But really, I love alpha men, so I think writing them is a matter of appreciating that special breed and keeping them ‘alpha men.’
Sophia Rose: I imagine you had to do some research on gear, weapons, fight skills even voodoo. What has been the most unusual thing you found yourself researching for your books?
S.E. Jakes: I have my BFF ready to wipe my hard drive at a moment’s notice, because the things I have to research are really crazy. I’m sure I’m on some watch lists. But the most unusual thing wasn’t something I really researched. It’s something I came up with for Catch a Ghost and right after it was published, my editor sent me an article about exactly the thing I wrote about. She was kinda freaked out, like, wait, this really happens.
Sophia Rose: There seem to be loose ties between the Men of Honor, the Hell or High Water, and now The Dirty Deeds series. Can they be read separate or should they be looked at as all in the same world and should be read in some sort of order? What can we expect in future from these series?
S.E. Jakes: Great question. I’ll try to answer without confusing anyone J First of all, I love creating spin-offs for a couple of reasons, the first being, the longer a series gets, the more unwieldy it becomes, for me and for new readers who might be intimidated. But also, with spin offs, I get to create a really broad universe. All my books take place in the same universe, so there’s always some overlap. Sometimes it’s a simple as the mention of a name, but I know, as a reader, I love when I notice things like that in a series.
So, Men of Honor can be read alone. Even though Prophet is mentioned there.
I think Free Falling is a great way to start the Hell or High Water series.
Dirty Deeds #1 really does tie into the Hell or High Water series. But books 2 & 3 will be a separate plot. To that end, I really worked on making Dirty Deeds a satisfying experience for both new and regular readers. Disclaimer: This novella was originally contracted to be a Prophet & Tommy short, and then my editor was like, “what about Mal & Cillian?” I had a small window – a 4 day window of time in which this book happens (and it runs along the same timeline as Daylight Again, Hell or High Water 3 does)…so I went for it. J People are currently hunting me down but hey, I’ve got plenty of C4…*glances over shoulder*
I’ve got 2 series coming up that haven’t been announced yet (one starts this summer and one starts in early 2015).
Also, my spin off (ha!) of Men of Honor starts on November 18, 2014 – we’ll revisit the guys from Bound by Law a bit as we meet some new heroes.
I’m also working on two secret-ish projects. They’ll pop up in 2014, but I’m not sure when. J So yeah, I’ve got a lot going on and I couldn’t be happier.
Sophia Rose: I love the covers on the Hell or High Water series and how they are each a tattoo from Tom’s body and play a part in the story. Was that your doing or a crafty publisher or cover artist? And is the cover of Dirty Deeds also closely connected to the story along these lines too?
S.E. Jakes: The concept was mine, but I couldn’t have pulled it off without the help of the awesome Victoria Colatta of VMC Art & Design and LC Chase from Riptide. When I planned the Hell or High Water series, I knew Tommy’s tattoos would be important. I really love the new object covers think Sylvia Day’s Crossfire Books, etc), but I also like man chest. This seemed like the best way to meld the two, and highlight Tommy’s different tattoos.
Dirty Deeds is a bit different, in that it’s the first cover with an actual man’s full face J So we’ve decided that this book will have Mal on the cover, book two will be Cillian and book 3 will have the two of them.
I think the common denominator in all my Riptide books are tattoos. The MOH series is more man-chesty.
Sophia Rose: If you had the opportunity to sit across the table with one of your guys from any of these series, who would it be? What would you both be drinking? And what would you corner him, um I mean chat with him about?
S.E. Jakes: I realize this will sound crazy but what the hell…I feel like I do sit with my guys. I hear them, so clearly. Prophet is always there, though. He’s got this running commentary going.
Sophia Rose: Thank you so much for taking time out of your schedule to join us here at The Delighted Reader! I know I’ll be looking forward to catching up on your backlist and going forward with each new S.E. Jakes’ book release.

Dirty Deeds: Dirty Deeds book 1
Two seasoned operatives finally meet their match: each other.
Cillian works for the mysterious Special Branch 20: an organization that runs black ops commissioned by the British government. His specialty is deep undercover assignments with virtually no support. He’s been alone for so long that he no longer knows anything else.
Mal’s also used to being alone. Wanted in several states and even more countries, he’s not allowed in the vicinity of any of his former Navy SEAL teammates. And his current assignment is to track Cillian in order to discover the spook’s endgame. Except he’s no longer sure which one of them is getting played.
Cillian isn’t about to let the mission that’s consumed him for the past several years crumble because an outsider is poking around where he doesn’t belong. But Mal forces his way through Cillian’s defenses—and into his heart—exposing a devastating betrayal that could destroy them both.
