This is a refreshing new book from a wonderful author I follow on Twitter. For a long time I knew she was an author, but had never had a chance to read her work! So imagine my excitement when I found out she was releasing a new series. I quickly pre-ordered this book, but as with everything, I had a ton to read before I could get to this one.
The story starts off with Kate home to close up some loose ends on her parents estate. Out with friends who are ghost hunting, Kate finds a grave with beautiful flowers adorning it and a simple T on the headstone. Aware suddenly she is not alone, she meets Calisto who instantly recognizes her as the reincarnated soul of his lost love, Tala.
Over two hundred years ago, Tala and Father Gregorio had a forbidden love affair. Deciding to give up the priesthood, Gregorio is denied the lifetime of love when Tala is brutally murdered. Having lost the life to live, Gregorio becomes a Night Walker. Don’t confuse this with vampire. While the same there are subtle nuances you find out by reading the book.
Now, over 200 years later, Tala’s soul has been reborn into Kate, who is having nightmares of Tala’s death and some wonderful ones of dancing with Gregorio. She can’t figure them out, but is drawn to Gregorio who is now Calisto, a rich benefactor with an assistant. Walking the night and dying during the day. But they aren’t safe. The church has not forgotten what Gregorio became and the destruction he can still unleash on earth.
There is something about a man mourning the loss of his soul mate for over 200 years. And that man being a defrocked priest turned into a Night Walker. At first you see the future with brief glimpses into the past. It let’s you see what happened in the past at relevant moments. The heroine’s soul is reborn into Kate, thrusting the Night Walker’s past well into the future. With intrigue coming from a fearful group within the Catholic Church, action abounds.
There is the struggle of Calisto wanting to save Kate no matter if he has to hurt her to do it. Then there is Kate, confused by everything…the dreams, the intense love she suddenly feels for Calisto, and the sense that there is something Calisto is hiding.
My emotions were engaged early on, feeling the hero’s unfulfilled love. The heroines dreams led me to yell at her to remember. Their love was felt deep in my heart! I was cheering for them. But the ultimate question is…will he turn Kate into a Night Walker? Or will he walk into the sun when she passes as a mortal?
Read the book to find out! Loved it!
