A while back I was able to pick up this book free on Amazon. But like so many free books, I just can’t always get to them when I want too. It also happens I really wasn’t familiar with Melissa Schroeder at the time. While at AAD, I fell in love with getting to know new to me authors and knew I would get into the Harmless series. So I picked up this book to start my journey.
Max and Anna have known each other all their lives and spent most of them being best friends. But they never really seem to take each other seriously and like their friendship the way it is. After Max nearly misses marrying the wrong woman and Anna once again breaks up with a loser artist, the two decide to have a party to celebrate their single status. When the two have a little too much tequila, they stop fighting the attraction that has been between them for years.
But a one night stand grows into more, but can Max overcome Anna’s need to not become a stable and committed couple or will they continue to just be friends with benefits?
Through most of the book, there is a hint that something happened to Anna in high school that makes her unable to commit to anyone for any length of time. She is portrayed as a woman with loose morals, which I kind of disliked. Anna works hard to run her business and we eventually learn what happened to her to make her distrustful. Unfortunately, I think she hangs on to that problem too long into her life.
Max is just to dedicated to his career and his own business. To the point he gets engaged to a woman he has no business committing too. When Max and Anna start having sex, you see him start to put priorities where they should be and move in on Anna as a man in love will do.
There is some miscommunication between the two that cause some problems. Sometimes I just want them to talk to each other and be honest, but really, we all have fears of rejection so I understood where they both were coming from.
The sexy love scenes are incredible. This isn’t a BDSM book, but it does have a what I call normal bondage with silk, some light spankings, sex in fun places that really you should have sex in 🙂
There are some secondary characters…a friend (who gets his own book), the high school boyfriend, family…oh and the secretary that has seen it all. Loved them all…except for ex-high school jerk.
Overall, it was a fun but not too deep story that kept made me want to continue reading the entire series!
