The Delight

The end. Yep, this is a delight to see the series come to and end, but also painful as I wanted so much more of this world. A damaged hero beyond all measure, but one heroine who won’t give up on him. **Sigh dreamily**

This series has been a favorite of mine since I got over how much the first book messed me up. Don’t forget to read the prequel or you will be as lost as I was at the beginning! The world has changed, and we don’t truly know why or how, but as usual the government had their hands in it. Scorpious has turned people into pychopaths, zombie like creatures or outright killed. Basic caring humanity ended, but a group of people in LA are trying to keep it together and build a society while the new president is out to obliterate them just to get a hold of the one woman he is obsessed with. Throw in a gang wanting to rule and tormenting this group. Mercenaries trying to figure out the same issues as our ragtag band of members, but at least the mercenaries want to help just as much. Now bunkers are being found that reveal the government was experimenting, hoarding and doing all kinds of naughty things.

We pick the story right up as one of the bunkers has been taken over and there are prisoners who were being experimented on. One is Marcus, Jax’s younger brother he left when the judge said jail or the military. But Marcus has no memories of the life before this agonizing one. He only wants to die, but he can’t when the one person who showed him any kindness needs his protection. He makes a vow to live to protect her.

Penny Kim is one of the last doctors still alive and recently infected with scorpius. A body guard that protects her isn’t want she wants, but Marcus shadows her every step when he is not scouting for the group. Tearing apart anyone who would harm the little doctor is getting in the way of everything. But he seems to lack the emotions to deal with rationality until his brother puts him in charge of finding a way to move the whole group to better planting grounds.

Penny wants more from Marcus and she gets it, but she also gets the alpha who going to give her all she needs and maybe some of what she wants. A race against time to save the pregnant women who haven’t delivered a healthy baby since the infection spread, Penny is up against a wall and not just by the virus, but also by the man who will save her even it means he has to leave.

The author does a great job of drawing us back into the Scorpious world and letting us think this is just a new story in an on-going series. There are threats everywhere, wounded poeple both emotionally and physically. Innocence is a thing of the past, but holding on to it for as long as they can isn’t. Threading through the story is the one of hope, doom, anger, fear, and a need to protect the human race.

Marcus is the heard hearted one, but he knows his strength. He plays with the children and especially one that doesn’t speak. Make no mistake that even if he doesn’t know what love is, he knows Penny is the one to show him. Penny came from a ideal life that was torn apart. Doing what is right is ingrained in her soul. Bus she is also a woman with desires that want to tame the one man who makes her care beyond reason. Sexual fustration can make for some fun story time.

I wasn’t expecting this series to come to an end, but it does in a nicely done dramatic way. I suspect it may have been intentional and unintentional. When I spoke to the author two years ago she mentioned a miscommunication on this series with her publisher. I figure after that, the author was looking for a way to write the last few romances and bring it all together. Sad as I have grown to truly enjoy this world and wanted to continue the journey with them But as with all things, they do come to an end.

About Rebecca Zanetti

New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti has worked as an art curator, Senate aide, lawyer, college professor, and a hearing examiner – only to culminate it all in stories about Alpha males and the women who claim them. She is a member of RWA, has won awards for her works throughout the industry, and has a journalism degree with a poly sci emphasis from Pepperdine University as well as a Juris Doctorate from the University of Idaho.

Growing up amid the glorious backdrops and winter wonderlands of the Pacific Northwest has given Rebecca fantastic scenery and adventures to weave into her stories. She resides in the wild north with her husband, children, and extended family who inspire her every day-or at the very least give her plenty of characters to write about.

I loved the first book, I need to read more. This sounds pretty good. I’m sorry the series ended though.

Always a bummer when a series you love ends! I will definitely be sitting this one out, as some of it sounds like it could be a worst-case scenario given current events and the scare-mongering going on!

I am intrigued. And Can I just note that the guy kinda looks like Henry Cavill? Lol
