Foolish Games was a very drama filled novel! I started it because of course it had a football player, but in reality there was no time on the field in the game. Instead you get a scandal threatening the hero’s future in football, a baby who needs a blood transfusion to live, a frightened mother who will do anything for her child and a lot of misunderstandings.

William the Conqueror Connley has spent all of his life thinking he wasn’t good enough. Born to a single mother of 16 in a small town, he always felt like an outsider that wasn’t good enough. Landing a scholarship to Yale playing football was a dream come true. When undrafted into the NFL, his college coach signs him to the practice squad when he moves on to NFL coaching. Will gets his lucky break when too many injuries pulls him up to the big leagues where he makes a play the skyrockets his career, but ends the quarterback he hits career. But the one thing he learned over and over was he couldn’t trust anyone and he would never father a child out of wedlock…until a condom breaks and the lady disappears the next morning without a name.

Julianne Marchione never has one nightstands, but when at a wedding of a bride she designed a gown for, she freaks out. Near the ocean, a storm hits along with a migraine. Through some mistakes she is woozy from the medicine and freaking out with a phobia over the storm when her room key doesn’t work. Will helps her out and they end up in bed together where she calls out another mans name. Leaving in shame before Will awakens, she never dreams she will become pregnant. Thinking Will has moved on, she decides to have the baby and never tell the father.

Fast forward to one month after the birth of their son and the baby has a condition threatening his life. The only cure…his father’s blood transfused into him. Imagine Will’s anger to find out he has a son Julianne decided to keep from him. He arranges for a quick marriage with separation papers waiting in the wings along with wihsking them off to his hometown.

Overshadowing all of this is a injury bounty scheme scandal coming out. Certain players were paid to injure other players for bonus. Will hasn’t been subpoenaed but every one suspects he was involved after his first hit since the coach paying the bounties was his former college coach. Oh and throw in Julianne’s older brother is a senator on the committee investigation the scandal. Needless to say there are a lot of secrets, misunderstandings and anger flowing throughout this story.

Tension is an understatement! No one trusted anyone. Everyone kept secrets. Misunderstandings and jumping to conclusions abounded. It wasn’t an easy going book by a long shot and I didn’t even get any football scenes!

Now when Will and Julianne come to a truce of sorts, you see just how wonderful Will can be when he cares about somebody. He worked with Julianne continuously on her phobias, but he did it gently and with lots of love. Julianne also lost her ability to design wedding gowns during her pregnancy. The creative juices dried up. When these two come together, they just felt right for each other and I disliked how much niggling doubt kept them arm lengths apart.

Throw in some side characters! Will’s mom, Annabeth, is just around 46 or so. Will’s GM, Hank sees her and instantly starts to fall in love. The two of them do some dancing, overcoming fears, and just learning about each other. Throw in Hank’s 16 year old daughter who likes to design jewelry and you have a sweet side story.

Brody, oh, Brody…how Will didn’t value the friendship you showed him. I hope you get your own book. I want to see you find a sweet thing to make you whole! BTW, Brody is a teammate of Will’s. Then there is Will’s best friend Gavin, who broke up with his fiancee before this book. We need to find him a woman too. Carly, Julianne’s best friend, already found love with the quarterback, but I really liked her!

I loved this story and the baby Owen. Just a tad to much drama for me to stomach, but all the twists and turns made it feel like suspense more than anything. I highly recommend this one for romance alone, not for the sports aspect.

Do you love sports romances? Which are your favorite?
Baby secret type of stories…oh, my…do you like them?
