This book has sat too long on my Kindle without being read! When I had to take a long drive I downloaded it from Audible and started listening and was instantly hooked. I had to drop everything else i was reading to finish this book up and I don’t regret putting the other book down! If you are a fan of Lords of the Underworld, then you have met Zacharel the angel. Have you wondered why his wings rained down snow? How he could be so cold? Well, this book shows you that and more. You don’t have to read LOTU to understand this new series, but some of the characters from that series do make an appearance.

Zacharel has spent his life not caring if he harms the innocent in the pursuit of the evil. Time after time he is displeased his Deity and now it is time to pay the piper. Zacharel is the leader of the angels that are on their last leg before they lose their wings. It’s Zacharel’s last chance to save himself and the angels under his leadership. Constantly his leadership is challenged and the punishment for everyone’s actions is his to bare. They are all dangerous, lethal and their hearts are hard to find. Keeping them all in check is not easy and Zacharel has a disdain for it that they all know and respond too.

A demon brutally murders Annabelle Miller’s parents in front of her and then claims her as his. Imprisoned for the crime she did not commit, Annabelle Miller is sentenced to a criminally insane institute. Four long years of drugs, abuse from doctors and fighting demons only she can see just proves the doctors theories she is insane. Demons have been coming to toy with her for years on their Masters command. Never is she killed, but brutally toyed with, making her good at killing demons. On top of that, her caseworker betrays her trust and abuses her after she is drugged. How this woman stays so strong, I never will understand.

Zacharel’s mission is to rid the institute of a demon attack. An attack that has not stopped in over four years. Following a demon through the institute, Zacharel hopes to find what is drawing the demons. What he finds is way more than what he expects. While Zacharel is saving Annabelle, it really isn’t the rescue we would expect.

The two dance around each other as they learn more and more about each other. They aren’t perfect, but life has been pretty hard on both of them. Betrayal from the people they trusted has led them to be more brutal with their dealings with each other. The romance builds slowly even though their bodies are drawn to each other instantly. Watching the two personalities unfold slowly, story after story of their past, helped paint a picture of just how powerful the two would become together.

While I figured out the ending pretty quickly, it wasn’t a disappointment. The author still had me wondering how all the pieces would fit together to get to the end. Each step into it, built and built until the climax had me sitting on the edge of my seat.

The side characters broke my heart and left me wanting to know more about them. I can’t wait to get the next story to see how these warriors one at a time will be redeemed. And let’s not forget the Lords of the Underworld also get a shot in this book and they don’t disappoint. The weaving of the two series is going to be awesome as we see how each side is gearing up for war.

While you don’t need to read The Lords of the Underworld series, Zacharel makes his first appearance there. If you like paranormal romances, I would suggest you start with Angels of the Dark! A delightful start to a series I know I am going to adore.
