Oh, dear me. Ben has been around since the beginning and we all thought he was vanilla. Just someone to man the door, keep the submissives in line and the first line of defense to Club Shadowlands. I learn early on that while I thought I knew Ben, I really knew nothing about this man. Don’t forget ball-breaker Anne who really does terrify me when I see what she does to her young slaves in previous books. So I guess it’s time to change up the players and get down to making them realize what they want and miss in life.
Ben isn’t one to share much about his life. Through the stories in this series, he has been the rock that guards the doors and signs people into the club. He also decides if submissive clothing and shoes (or lack there of) are appropriate before letting them in. Ex-military, Ben is learning to accept he can’t control everything, especially while in the military. PTSD sometimes gets to him in his solitary life. Working at Club Shadowlands allows him to interact with people while also staying free of their issues. Everyone thinks he needs the money, but really, you have to get to know who he is to realize watching the door isn’t a job for income.
Anne is a tough woman living in a world where women are expected to take safe comfy jobs, not being a bounty hunter. Especially her father and uncles keep riding her that women can’t do the job. Weary from doing a job she loves, taking on crap from her family and recently releasing a slave, she is trying to find her place in BDSM that used to be total ownership with a sadistic twist.
Ben starts to take an interest in Anne and in a way stalks her at the club house without being too overly aggressive. Anne likes pretty boys she can punish and bend to her will. Ben doesn’t fit that mode and Anne pushes back continually that it can’t work. Then Ben pushes back saying he wants to try. They both hide secrets from each other in an attempt to shield their hearts, but also to make each other happy.
Now Anne admits to a past of men thinking she is less than they are. Men who still do it today. In a way she takes on men to punish them, but I don’t say this in a bad way because she is a good Mistress. She gives her boys what they need and she gets what she needs as well.
And therein lies the problem. Ben isn’t a boy to be punished. While he can accept his submissive needs, he isn’t a slave and that is all Anne takes.
I was totally immersed in this story of a manly man ready to find someone to love and wanting to try to be what she needed while also not losing his identity. Ben was so haut! Sizzling skillets I wanted him to find a better woman a times who could appreciate him. Anne was just in a place where she needed to learn herself what she needed and wanted. Watching Ben’s interactions with the Masters, subs, friends and even his family led me to believe that while he still deals with PTSD, he is a man you don’t let go of…ever.
Anne was a Domme at the crossroads of figuring things out. Through this she got some really bad smack downs that were totally inappropriate from people I have trusted in past stories. Don’t worry, she is one strong cookie and doesn’t back down from what is often perceived as a men’s only club with dealing with BDSM. The inventive things she does with Ben gave me shivers. She is one inventive lady.
Master Z and Jessica have a huge part in this story as well. Jessica is in the latter stages of her pregnancy and with that all the hormones a lady can get. Master Z is one of those masters that sees all, but sometimes things right in front of him get missed. It was refreshing to see Master Z having to get back to what he loved about Jessica. Jessica…oh boy, she bratted out and got what she needed if not wanted.
Other Masters and their subs all make an appearance. Some short side stories were included for most of them and I enjoyed seeing them still rev some engines if it has been few years since I read their stories.
Servicing the Target is full of sexy, smokin’ hot, jump on the bed scenes, but it also has a balance of real life to make the characters pop out and become part of our fictional family. Anne may be a ball buster, but she also a woman with a lot of common sense and a person who makes mistakes. She realizes these things and I appreciate that fact. Ben is a man who loves deeply and makes sacrifices to be something he is not for someone he wants. He learns a thing or two about that. Throw in some side intrigue and I was jumping up and down cheering for these two. A great story and who could expect anything less from the Queen of BDSM, Cherise Sinclair?
