Have You Found Any New Interests or Hobbies During the COVID Lockdown/Stay at Home Orders?
Yes! I was interested in learning how to sand and re-finish furniture because I had a few yard sale pieces I got and they were waiting for me to spiff them up. I also had the tools and the finish and gloss out in the garage ready to go.
My husband taught me how to work the belt sander and a smaller sander (can’t remember the name) so I sanded and finished a drop-leaf coffee table and the top of a dressing table (hubby will do the tricky legs and scrollwork).
My next project is a drop-leaf kitchen table that was left in our basement and my MIL told me was probably original to the house since it’s from the early 1930’s. I want to restore it so I need to find the stencil patterns that were originally painted on it and then I’m good to go.

Applause, applause. That table is stunning. What a great skill set you picked up during lockdown. I never thought it would last this long. I should have done something more productive.
Ah shucks! Thanks, Sam. I’ve been wanting to learn how since I saw my sister in law had redone her chairs and they looked gorgeous. Sometimes you need to just vege so no guilt, lady. 🙂
That is really cool Sophia!
Thanks! I had a good teacher. 🙂
Sophia – That is beyond awesome! Great work. I’m so impressed with the quality of work and that you had the ambition to learn something new and put it to use! I only started a new video game. lol.
It was a good starter project since there was a nice flat surface. Ha, I took the picture so the flaws didn’t show, but they are there. 🙂 I do want to get better so I can do more complicated sanding projects.
Hey, no guilt over needing to dive into the gaming world to get away. That is needed sometimes, too. 🙂
that table is gorgeous. you did a great job

Thanks, Sherry! I was nervous at first, but then figured out how much pressure to put on the sander without causing grooves. I struggle with smaller rounded areas, but I’m getting there. 🙂
That’s awesome! I used to do some of that years ago and wanted to get back into it but we just moved to our new place and need to start over with supplies and that wasn’t easy to do during the lockdown lol

Oh yeah, moving and getting settled in and then COVID would definitely cause some extra hurdles to doing DIY projects. 🙂
That’s very cool. I did some of this work when I was in my teens and 20s but I’m kind of lazy on it these days.
I can honestly say that it was the least expensive route to go for the furniture, but yes, one does have to factor in the time and energy to do it. 🙂 Neat that you got the chance to learn sanding and staining early on.
Wow Sophia! I’m very impressed with your work. I can’t even imagine how hard that was to do. I’m not gifted that way! All I’ve done is read, listen to books and watch tv. I’m so boring these days.
I definitely couldn’t have done it without close supervision. LOL I wanted to learn how to play guitar, too, and still need to work on that. I like to read and watch shows to get away from it all, too.
this so cool! like now is the perfect time to learn new things 🙂
I’m attempting to catch up on things I should have been doing in the 1st place, lols.
Thanks! I was glad to get to these projects finally. It feels great to get stuff done. Oh man, I hear you. I still have a long catch-up list. 🙂
This is a very useful skill! I’ve refinished and repainted furniture and it’s a nice way to re-fresh a look. Looks beautiful, Sophia! 🙂
I agree. I keep eyeballing different scuffed up pieces in the house and planning their reno job. 🙂 Thanks, Rachel!
That sounds like a great skill to have! Must be fun to be able to restore your own furniture this way.
Yes, I can afford furniture that would not normally be in my budget and stain it in colors that match my other furnishings. Win, win!
