The Great Pick Up Line featuring
The Possibilities of Amy by Jaye Frances
“I made a couple of phone calls last night,” he began. “Asked around to find out what bus she takes. Then Mark drove me over to the stop early, before anyone was there. All I had to do was wait.”
“Wait for what?”
Pete smiled with pretentious superiority. “For her to show up, stupid. Then I made sure we got on the bus together. It was no big deal,” he added, patronizing me with false modesty.
“You’re right, so far no big deal.”
Pete frowned. “There was a lot more to it than that. I had to lay it on, about how it must be tough being new here, and not knowing anybody, having to make new friends. You know, all the crap I figured she’d wanna hear.”
Pete and Amy. Together. I held the idea outside, not letting it in, refusing to believe it was true.
“And that shit worked?” My voice must have revealed the hopeful doubt I continued to nurture, because Pete sneered at me like I had just called him a liar.
His voice came back full and defiant. “Hey, asshole, we’re going out, aren’t we?”
I focused all my energy on maintaining a neutral expression. “I don’t know. Are you?”
My cynical attitude finally set him off, and he let me have it, relishing every opportunity to deliver the sting of entitlement—it was his story to tell, not mine.
“Okay, look. We’re on the bus, right? And we’re talking about her old school, and how different it is here, and then she says she hasn’t been out since she moved here. I mean, that’s gotta be a hint, right? Then she starts asking me stuff. About which new movies I’ve seen. And which ones I liked best. Then I tell her she would really like the one that’s playing right now. So I tell her we should go see it, and it would give me a chance to fill her in on all the important stuff around school.”
“You don’t know any important stuff,” I said, interrupting.
Mark took a step back, surprised at my uncharacteristic affront.
“You’re just jealous,” Pete said, “because I had the balls to ask her out first.” He squinted hard and added, “And that’s just fine, ’cause tonight, I’ll be with Amy while you’re sitting at home playing with your dick.”
“Yeah man, Pete’s gonna be the first,” Mark added, apparently delighted with this new opportunity to irritate me.
