Welcome to The Book Report where we run down everything that happened in the month and update you on challenges, giveaways, reviews and more!

Shari’s Update

August started off a new school year and this made me sad. I am probably one of the rare parents that actually didn’t want her kids to go back to school. So what did we do on the last free day? We filled up the whirlpool bath and did pedicures while dancing to the Macarana. We had lunch and went shopping for cactus. It was an odd day, but the kids loved every minute of us being wacky.

Sophia Rose took some much needed time off, so I got my review hat on and saddled up!  I wrote 14 reviews this month! If you know me, I have been slacking on writing reviews and I say I am going to do better and never produce. With having a new office for my new job, I find I don’t have a huge amount of clients so I work on the blog more.

I am also a little unhappy about the blog design. I keep trying to make it better and patching it all together. So I said STOP! I signed up for a course on coding behind the scenes of a WordPress site. This one is pretty low level. Once I get done with that, I am going to take a deeper course. It’s a good thing my background is in IT. Hopefully I haven’t lost all my knowledge.

So a lot going on, but I can say I feel a little ahead on things. Hopefully this will keep going!

My Reading Breakdown:  1 NetGalleys (95%), 3 Free Books, 1 Kindle Unlimited,  6 purchased books, 11 read total, 14 reviews written.

Sophia Rose’s Update

 Howdy all!

Hope your summer’s been treating you well (or winter if you’re in the southern hemisphere).  I’ve been back from Utah for a few weeks now.  What’s the old saying…“Man plans and the gods laugh”?   Well, we planned to do some camping and then visit with my family.

Two words:  wild fires.

We started out camping up in Northern Nevada’s Ruby Mountains and a fire broke out from a lightning strike.  Not to be daunted, we checked into camping in other locations that didn’t require a reservation.  Fires were going in or around three of those.  This left the available campgrounds within the region all full.

Change of plans.

We went on day trips to hike and picnic in day use areas in southern Idaho, western Wyoming, and northern Utah.  All was well.  I am pampered enough to enjoy sleeping in a cozy bed and having use of full facilities while still getting out to commune with nature.

On a serious note, my best wishes go out to those whose lives and property were/are most affected by the fires.  My cousin and her family had to evacuate to get away from the big one in Northern California.  My thanks goes to those in the firefighting community who courageously and sacrificially work the fires.

As to my August reading, I’ve read a total of 21 books.

Reading Breakdown:  5 Net Galleys (98%), 11 author/publisher requests, 5 TBR pile, 2 Kindle Unlimited, 9 audio, 12 new to me authors, 5 new to me series, 2 end of series

COYER (Clean-Off Your E-Reader) Summer will be finished by the time you read this.  I had a great time with this one and will be pretty close to meeting all my goals for the main challenge and several mini-challenges and readathons within COYER that I tackled.  This really is a fun challenge group and great way to make a dint in my dusty TBR pile.

What about you?  Read any good ones this summer?  Participate in any summer reading challenges?  Do Tell!

Sounds like you both have been busy. Good luck on the coding course. It’s always nice to have a little time off for a vacation.

Thanks, Mary! It really is a treat to get away for a while. 🙂

I got lost in the coding course on CSS. The nest stuff lost me. At least I have been able to accomplish two of the items on my list to do. Now onto another piece. CSS is not something I will ever like. CSS is just evil.

Shari – I love that you made a special day with your kids before they went back to school. My daughter is so busy and seems to be always gone so it wasn’t too big of a change at our house. Yay for getting your review writing mojo going 🙂

Sophia Rose – Oh no about the wildfires interrupting your plans. The fires are scary and seem to be everywhere this year. I do love your photos and am glad you had some time off.

I wanted to be mad about the fires messing stuff up, but with people losing their homes and their things even a firefighter getting killed, I was actually pretty grateful and willingly enjoyed the day trips and other fun stuff instead. It was great getting time away. 🙂

It does sound like you were able to have a good time. I hate to think of what everyone dealing the fires is going through. The loss of life is terrible and my heart goes out to anyone affected by the fires.

Yeah, there are so many it and it really is devastating.

Thanks Carole! I really miss my kids. Unfortunately one of them is struggle with self esteem and a boy telling her to just go kill herself. I am glad she reported him at school. I think I am going to call school on Tuesday to talk to the councilor about it all.

My review mojo is hung up right now, lol. Spending to much time trying to redesign our site and spinning my wheels. Thinking I need to take a break and go back to reviewing to see if it clears up my mind.

Such a shame about all those fires – scary times! Is that your RV in the photo? We’ve just bought our first and I can’t wait to get away in it after several years of caravanning. We plan to spend this winter RVing in Portugal and Spain 🙂

That is my parent’s RV. Its nice with plenty of room for the six of us though its not one of the big ones.

Oh neat! I hope you have a wonderful time on your winter road trip through Portugal and Spain. You’ll have to do pictures on your blog of all the places you see. 🙂

Oh sorry to hear about the fires! And yes hearts go out to the people affected- how awful. Glad you still got to do some hiking and nature stuff though. And looks like you both did great on challenges!

It is hard sending kids back to school- the summer seemed to go by so fast!

Hope you both have a great weekend and a nice LAbor Day!

The fires out west are heartbreaking! It is really hard to send my kids back to school. Summer vacation is so short, especially when they don’t plan enough snow days and won’t apply for waivers. We have an online system they could have used, but they still refuse to use it. So we had a lot of days tacked on to the end of our school year which ate up a lot more days. But it really was sad because my oldest is in her senior year and I won’t really be doing the first day of school pictures any… Read more »

Yes, it was still very nice going out to the parks and national forest day spots. So awful the way there are so many places burning.

Thanks, Greg! You have a wonderful Labor Day, too!

I wondered where Sophia Rose went!
I really like the layout. Easy to navigate!

Yep! A little R&R, Carole. It was nice.

Oh yes! She is making it so snazzy. I thought it was cool when the ‘What’s New’ folder opened at the top. 🙂

Glad you noticed the What’s New section. I am using the free edition since it is so expensive otherwise. So far I like it other have to update it every day instead of scheduling ti.

Thank you! I just want to freshen up a few things on the blog as it seems to run slow and I can’t figure out why.

It was. The air quality was bad and my dad was really effected, but we had a good time and were never really close to danger, thankfully. It went by so fast. 🙂

Glad to see that you both got in some good reading, and hearing about those fires was quite something to see on television. I’m glad everyone is safe. I say we all go old school and do the Macarena! Hugs…RO

Sophia Rose

Yes, it was a great month of reading. I’ve been told that many of the fires that were worrying are under control now which is great.

LOL, the Macarena was a fun one.

That was quite the hitch in your plans. Glad you were still able to see a few things and get home safely!

It was and my dad was so bummed that we couldn’t give his new- used RV a longer first run, but the safe distance was necessary b/c the fires jumped and the wind pushed them plus the smoke made breathing rough. But, yes, we improvised and had a great time. My dad loves coming up with road trips so he’s already planning the next one he’ll take ‘Molly’ out on with my brother and his wife next month. 🙂 It turned out very nice and I got more time visiting with my brother and his wife. They taught me how… Read more »

The fires are/were just crazy. And moving way too fast for comfort. One of my authors had to evacuate for a spell when fire hit her neighborhood but thankfully it jumped right around the houses and spared them even though street signs were burned.

Hope your dad’s trip is a bit less eventful. lol

Also I’m done comment bombing you. heh I was catching up on near 2 weeks of posts for everyone today. Whew boy!

Thanks! I’m sure he’ll have a much better time of it now. Plus fall temps and colors will make for great camping, too.

LOL! You were a commenting machine. Look at you go! 🙂
