Welcome to The Book Report where we run down everything that happened in the month and update you on challenges, giveaways, reviews and more!

Shari’s Update

Sometimes January sets the tone for the year. Last year it started off destroying 2019. This January has had it’s ups and downs. Mostly I am hoping it isn’t a sign of another 2019.

The good: no snow storms and no one sick in January! Sometimes you have to look at the good and not the bad, right?

Reading was off to a slow start, but I finally buckled down and started reading and I am up to 13 books for January! Reviews written weren’t huge, but I hope to get that back up in February now that I have books to review!

How was your month?

Statistics: 13 Books Read, 11 purchased, 1 Kindle Unlimited, 1 NetGalley and 1 Audiobook

I haven’t ticked off a huge number on any challenge so I will save that update for February. Have fun reading!

Sophia Rose’s Update

Happy New Year and woohoo, we’re in the ‘20’s!

Did anyone else struggle with what to call that last decade or so?  The teens? The naughts? Ugh… but now we’re the 20’s and that is so much easier.

I had a lovely holiday with family and friends.  We had a Christmas potluck and White Elephant exchange for Christmas day at my in-law’s.  What a crack up! My husband’s brother in law gave the most hilarious (and creepy) gift. He took an old Tinkerbell print and painted a bright red Joker smile on it and signed in the red ‘Joker was here’ (like from that first Michael Keaton Batman).  Our college age niece opened it and it startled her badly- but she kept it for her dorm room to scare her roommate. LOL In the evening we Skyped with my family out west.

I did end up catching a cold a few weeks back and have been unable to shake the sinus infection that came with it.  It has slowed me down, but I was only out of commission for a few days. I got the Christmas stuff down and put away in good time.  A big winter storm had me out shoveling away last weekend and this week has been figuring out what has turned our tuxedo cat, Bailey into ‘Wyatt Urp-up’ as we’ve been calling him.  Poor buddy must have picked weight loss as his New Year’s resolution, but I keep telling him this is not the route to take. Kidding, but yeah, his upset belly has me mystified since we aren’t doing anything different and he shows no other illness symptoms.

As to the book front, I’ve been in something of a slump (though it probably won’t seem like it when you see my reading totals).  At first, I didn’t feel like reading when I had the cold, but that is still the case as I fight the infection and try to keep up with responsibilities.  I fall asleep even through the most riveting read or just can’t concentrate. I’ve been prioritizing books for blog tour reads because I feel those are must-read commitments, but beyond that, haven’t been doing as well keeping up with my book stack- not that it has stopped me from acquiring more…   I’m glad I just got in a batch of audiobooks for review because I do better when I listen and have chores to do. Hopefully, the reading funk will pass.

That said, here’s my reading total for January:  21 books

Book Breakdown:  7 Netgalley (97%), 4 author/publisher requests, 2 library, 5 TBR, 7 audio, 6 new to me authors, 5 new series

I’ve read 11 books so far this month so not too bad. I keep looking at NetGalley for a good book but I’m just not seeing any good PNR there right now. Guess it’s time to go take a look at my wish list and buy a few books to read.

I got a sinus infection after my cold too this month. That’s never fun.

Sometimes I feel like I could go crazy snatching up all the books at Net Galley and other times I’m not tempted whatsoever. Maybe February will bring a lot of new PNRs for you.

Yeah, the infection seems a given no matter what sort of illness you started with even allergies. I’ve been wiping stuff down in bleach, airing the place out, washing all the linens in hot and cooking with vast amounts of garlic to get rid of the infection. 🙂

I’ve been in such a reading/blogging slump but I *think* I’m on my way out of it. I read 8 books in January. Still low for me but better than 0-2 lol

My husband had a White Elephant exchange for work over the holidays. We had never heard of it before but it was fun.

That is super that you’re getting your reading/blogging mojo back, Karen. 🙂

I had such a blast doing the White Elephant exchange and it took a lot of pressure off getting the right gift for certain family members.

I’ve read 12 books so far this year, so at least right now I am off to a good start. That will probably change with all the medical tests that I am scheduled for over the next month. Ugh. You both seem to be off to a great start to your reading goals! Happy reading.

Yes, that is a good start, Jenea. Way to go!
But yuck on the med tests. Wishing you well, lady. 🙂

oh no Sophia!!! I am so sorry to hear that you haven’t been feeling well and that you entered a book slump. Not sure I have ever known you to have one. But looks like you got some GREAT books read despite that. Hope February is a better and healthy filled month for you

I think feeling rundown after the holidays and getting the cold is the biggest contributor to the slump. I’ve never really had one before. Usually, I can just shift genres or go from print to audio and never miss a beat, but this month I really had to make myself read or listen. 🙂
Thanks, Renee!

So far so good ladies! And I’ve not been reading as much as I want. I’ve mainly been just “on track” of my reading goals.

Steady and on track is a good start, but I know what you mean about wanting to do more. 🙂 I’m five books off the pace for GoodReads.

I had an okay month for reading but audios really saved me. Ten already this year for a total of 19 read for the year. 17 of those in January. I think I’m addicted to audio books now. Shari, I’m glad there’s been no illness in January and Sophia, I think I’ve talked to you since you’ve been sick, although I didn’t know you were still sick. Feel better. I had a cold and bad cough in January too, but it’s cleared up.

You did fabulous, Lorna, with your reading and listening. I’m hoping to get back on track now that I’m starting to feel better and I’ve got Bailey’s situation sorted out.

Shari – that’s an impressive number of your own books read. Wow!
Sophia – I hope you figure out what’s ailing your cat, and that you can get out of your slump

Thank you, Sam! I did actually get great news from the vet the last time I took him in. He’s got an inner ear infection that was not detected earlier until they did lab work. Whew, now he’s back to normal. My health is starting to get back to normal, too, which is helping with the reading. 🙂

Shari – I agree that sometimes it is best to focus on the good and 13 books for the month is great.

Sophia Rose – I am sorry to hear that your kitty isn’t feeling well and that you were under the weather. I do hope you get past that reading funk very soon.

I hope you both have a wonderful February!

Thank you, Carole!

I had good news about Bailey. He had an inner ear infection that as soon as he started getting treatment ended many of his symptoms and he started eating again. I finally shook my own infection after three weeks and my reading mojo came back with my health. 🙂 All to the good now.
