In my latest release, Forged By Desire, my hero and heroine are both friends and partners, who serve the Nighthawks Guild, in an alternate Victorian London. They’ve had each other’s backs over the years, on all manner of dangerous cases, but it’s only recently that my poor oblivious hero, Garrett, has realised that his partner, Perry – who prefers men’s attire – is not just a woman, but an attractive one.
So, for fun, I thought I’d share some of my favourite quotes from Forged By Desire.
In the first, we have Garrett and Perry undercover at the opera. It’s the first time Garrett has seen his partner in a dress. Maybe there’s a bit of tension there? After all, Perry’s had some unrequited feelings for her partner for a long time –
Idly fanned herself, Perry glanced around the room with a slightly bored expression. “I do know what I’m doing.”
“So do I.”
“Yes, but playing a cad is already within your repertoire.” The fan stirred cool air over his lips as he reached out and leaned his hand against the column behind her. Perry’s expression lashed pure heat through him. “That was never in any doubt.”
“If I doubt you, it’s only because you’ve never played the lady before.”
“Perhaps you simply never noticed.”
He looked down. There was a slightly challenging note beneath the words.
Garrett’s the kind of hero who always has a smooth word for everyone, especially the ladies… But he’s struggling with his own demons in Forged, and also with feelings that he’s never owned for a woman before. And when Perry’s dark past threatens to resurface, he has to convince her to stay with him –
“You’re my anchor, Perry. You’re my breath, when I feel like I can’t catch my own. I don’t think I can be strong enough to fight this alone.”
And once things start to heat up, he’s definitely going to go to all lengths to win her over. What can be sexier than a scandalous waltz?
“You look beautiful,” he said, sweeping her into the dance. Of course he knew the steps, though she didn’t ask how. There’d been affairs in his past with ladies of the Echelon and Garrett had always been able to master any skill with minimal effort, damn him.
He turned her in a slow circle, holding onto her wrists from behind. “Though I prefer you in red.” Another turn, drawing her back against his chest, his voice whispering over the skin of her neck. “And wet.”
And now we have Garrett and Perry, butting heads over the best way to deal with the villain, who is watching their stolen dance –
“You shouldn’t be here. You’re going to ruin everything,” Perry said.
And just for a teaser, I’ll throw in a few little excerpts from Of Silk And Steam, which is due out in March 2015, and follows on from Forged:
Here we have Mina, the Duchess of Casavian, and Leo Barrons, enemies who are forced into an alliance for a daring escape from the villains –
Barrons offered her one of the glasses, his fingers brushing against hers. He frowned, then turned her hand palm up. “You’re freezing.”
“Some idiot pushed me into a canal.”
Of course, we can’t forget Blade, who is Leo’s brother-in-law (and the hero of book one) and often has some of the more entertaining quotes, particularly following a certain kidnapping of an icy duchess –
“Why, look at you.” Blade strode forward, his hands shoved into the pockets of his long leather coat and a curious expression on his face. Catching the reins of the horse, he eyed the duchess in Leo’s arms. “Gretna’s that way,” he said, tipping his head toward the north.
And Blade to Leo –
Blade slapped a hand on his knee. “Don’t make me throw you over me shoulder too. It ain’t seemly.”
And here’s one last little teaser that Mina says to Leo. I’ll let you use your imagination for this one –
“You tied me to a chair. I would hardly call what happened here before ‘making love.’ Something more akin to war.”
Hope you enjoyed my little favourite quote tour through Forged by Desire – and the teasers for Of Silk And Steam!
