Yakkety Yak Let's Chat

So I am going to admit something: I am in a blogging funk. What do I mean by that. Well, over the last few months, it feels like all I do is work on the blog. Sometimes 4 days a week of 12 hours with the other 3 days around 2 hours. I sit back afterwards and try to figure out what I got accomplished. It’s gotten so bad that I have around 26 books to review that I just don’t have the time to get too.

It could be that my family life has been up in the air with so many surgeries, school starting and a conference. It could be that I just don’t feel like writing. It could be that I do all the scheduling and formatting of posts that I just get tired. It could be a lot of things.

Then I have a wonderful time at Authors After Dark and I can’t wait to get back to share with you all that I heard, saw and want to giveaway only to be hit with so many emails that I am still answering them a week later. And I get down again at all the work I have sitting in front of me and no time to get to it.

With blogging you have to take the good and the bad. I love blogging. I love giving away books and swag. I love talking to authors, bloggers and other readers. But at the end of the day, I don’t get paid for this and I don’t advertise. That is my decision and I stand by it.

So this week, I almost sat down and cried when I started writing down everything I have to do before I can get to what I want to do. And with the length of that list it is feeling very daunting that I might never get to read the books I bought and have looked forward to for a long time to come. That just is sad.

So enough of my whining. I am not the type to sit and bemoan things. I gripe, rant and then move on.

So now is the move on stage and I need some help from bloggers that have been here. How do you handle it?

Well here is what I am doing right now.

  1. I bought a day calendar and I am writing down all the tours and deadlines I have.
  2. I am making a list of books I agree to review or get from NetGalley and ordering them by release date or due date.
  3. I bought some nice pretty pens in different colors…well, that was just me treating myself to something cute and fun.
  4. I am working day by day to get posts formatted and putting aside anything that can wait on my list of things to do.
  5. I am scheduling 2 hours every morning except for Sundays to do blog work. That’s it except for an occasional email conversation.
  6. I am slowing down on book tours. I may accept something sent to me, but I am not going to go looking to fill in spots.
  7. I am going to read more, review more and just plain get back to why I started blogging: READING.

Some of this will just seem silly, but when you are down in a funk, sometimes a pretty pen will pull you out. Silly. Yes. But something has to work 🙂

As a reader, what are you looking for on our blog? More reviews, interviews, authors visits? Or less of any one thing? What makes you happy when you visit Delighted Reader?

Slow down a little & don’t try to cram in so many books ar one time. We’ll live & you won’t feel so overwhelmed. Sometimes things feel like you’re doing too much because— you are!

I like the treat yourself part (my weakness is pretty paper and bookmarks. I also like that you recognized that you need to slow down, take less commitments and remember why you started blogging-reading- and do it.

Ignore many of those pesky emails-particularly mine- for a little while. ;D

I SO hear you and understand. *HUGS* I’ve been there before and it is so frustrating. I think your plan of action is perfect – very similar to what I’ve had to do. But I really want to emphasize number 7 – you are in this because you love to read. So if you need to say no and take some time away from blogging and tours, do it. I’ve really cut back on the contests, blog tours and extras. One suggestion that has worked really well with me is a spreadsheet. I use google drive/docs and share it with… Read more »
